About
the Conference
The Nevada Department
of Education and Nevada Center for Excellence in
Disabilities are once again teaming up with the
International Center for Leadership in Education for
the 2011 Mega Conference to bring quality
professional development to Nevada's teachers. This
three-day conference will kick-off with a
presentation by Dr. Michael Fullan, Dean of the
Ontario Institute for Studies in Education of the
University of Toronto. An innovator and leader in
teacher education, Dr. Fullan has developed a number
of partnerships designed to bring about major school
improvement and educational reform. He participates
as researcher, consultant, trainer, and policy
advisor on a wide range of educational change
projects with school systems, teachers' federations,
research and development institutes, and government
agencies in Canada and internationally, and is
widely published on the topic of educational change.

April 8,
2011 Keynote Address: Michael Fullan: Teaching through
adversity-Facing Challenges and Making a Difference
April 9, 2011 Keynote Address: Alisa
Braddy: Teaching for Boys
So what’s up with boys? In recent
years, neuroscientists have discovered that
differences between boys and girls are more profound
than anyone would have ever imagined. Too many of
our boys and young men are falling behind in school
and life. Many educators lack understanding of
typical boy traits such as aggression, verbal and
emotional discretion, and interest in ANYTHING
kinesthetic unknowingly creating brain-antagonistic
learning environments. This session combines
cutting-edge brain research to show you why boys
learn differently and how you can differentiate
teaching strategies tohelp them succeed in the
classroom and in life.
April 10, 2011 Keynote Address: Dr.
Howie Knoff: The Seven C's of Success: Student, Staff,
and School Systems
“Seven C’s of Success.” These are
the processes that help teams to be successful, and
that work-groups need to develop. The “Seven C’s”
are: Communication, Caring, Commitment,
Collaboration, Consultation, Consistency, and
Celebration. Each of these elements will be
described and discussed in detail in the context of
individual professionals, school-based teams, and
larger systems like schools and districts. Examples
of the successful and unsuccessful use of these
elements will be addressed. And, the audience will
be encouraged to share their own positive and
negative examples.
In the end, this presentation will
emphasize that “process guides content.” That is,
even the best, evidence-based approaches,
strategies, and people implement interventions in
our schools. If the professionals doing the
implementation are not working with the Seven C’s,
they either will not be successful, or their success
will take so much time and effort that they will
likely give up in the process.

Dr. Howie Knoff: Disobedient,
Disruptive, Defiant, and Disturbed Students: Behavioral
Interventions for Challenging Students
This presentation focuses on
interventions that schools need to implement to
assist challenging students who are behaviorally
unsuccessful in schools. In focusing on these
interventions, ways to translate the research that
typically underlies these interventions into
practical and realistic classroom-based strategies
will be particularly emphasized. Thus, the
interventions discussed will be evidence-based,
teacher-friendly, and field-tested.
Lin Kuzmich: Differentiated
Instruction in Practice
Introducing and practicing
differentiated instruction in any classroom, school
or program will help teachers and leaders become
better facilitators of learning for all students.
This session will introduce a workable model for
differentiation and provide techniques to manage the
differentiated learning environment at all levels
PreK-12. This model includes the use of on-going
data to help educators make the best choices for all
types of learners.

Kenneth Wesson: Brain-Based Classrooms
The premise of my research,
speeches and workshops over the past three decades
has been based on the question, "If it's your job to
develop the mind, shouldn't you know how the brain
works?" Participants will gain knowledge and
practical application of how to integrate brain
research into effective instructional strategies.
This brings us to the message of this session: What
All Educators Should Know About Learning and the
Human Brain: Neuroscience and Brain-Considerate
Learning and Teaching Tips - Resources for
Brain-Considerate Classroom.
