Nevada Academic Content Standards
The Nevada Academic Content Standards (NVACS) define what students should know and be able to do by the end of each grade. Standards are not curriculum, instructional practices, or teaching strategies; instead, they serve as the foundation for developing curriculum and guiding effective instruction. NVACS help ensure consistent expectations for student learning across the state.
Standards are essential because:
- They set clear, measurable goals to inform instruction and assess student achievement.
- They help ensure all students have access to high-quality, rigorous instructional materials and learning opportunities.
- They provide clear expectations that support schools in preparing students with the knowledge and skills needed for success beyond the classroom.
Nevada Revised Statute (NRS) requires districts and charters to teach the Nevada Academic Standards in all core content areas. NRS 389.003 requires all school boards of trustees to enforce the instruction of standards and NRS 389.018 designates the core subjects and minimum units of credits that are required in high school.
