Nevada Advisory Council for Financial Literacy

Overview

Nevada law established the Advisory Council on Financial Literacy to promote financial literacy and education across the state. The Nevada State Financial Literacy Advisory Council was established through Senate Bill 314 (SB314) during the 80th Legislative Session in 2019. This legislation created the Council to develop a strategic plan for financial literacy education, identify learning activities, and facilitate various financial literacy events.

In 2023, Assembly Bill 274 (AB274) was enacted to revise provisions governing required instruction in financial literacy and to change the composition of the Council.

Purpose

  • To improve financial literacy among Nevadans, particularly students and young adults.
  • To develop and promote policies, programs, and resources that encourage financial education.
  • To advise on integrating financial literacy into the state’s educational curriculum.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Advising the State Board of Education:

    • Recommending curriculum standards and programs that address financial literacy.
    • Suggesting enhancements to teacher training in financial education.
  2. Community Engagement:

    • Collaborating with businesses, nonprofits, and other stakeholders to support financial literacy initiatives.
  3. Assessment and Reporting:

    • Evaluating the effectiveness of financial literacy programs.

    • Submitting annual reports to the Governor and Legislature detailing progress, challenges, and recommendations.

  • Requires financial literacy topics, such as budgeting, credit management, and saving, to be taught in schools.
