Nevada State Board of Education Seeks Community Input on Adjusting High School Start Times

September 18, 2024

CARSON CITY, Nev. – The Nevada State Board of Education is seeking community input about high school start times through a statewide survey.

The survey is available on the Nevada Department of Education’s website and will remain open through Oct. 4.

“The State Board of Education has deliberated this topic at length, and we’ve had feedback from district and school administrators,” said Felicia Ortiz, president of the Nevada State Board of Education. “We want to hear from all stakeholders and we’re hoping families, teachers and most importantly, students, will share their thoughts through this survey. We look forward to hearing from all of you!”

The Nevada State Board of Education is exploring potential solutions to some of the key challenges facing the state's public school system, including chronic absenteeism, behavioral issues, and low academic achievement.

In January, the Board of Education requested that the Nevada Department of Education gather community feedback on this proposed change through a statewide survey.

The survey aims to collect input from students, parents, educators, and community members to guide decision-making on this important issue. The results of the survey may influence the development of a bill draft request for the 2025 legislative session.
