Nevada Department of Education Announces Financial Literacy Month Events

Thursday, March 20, 2025

CARSON CITY, Nev. – The Nevada Department of Education and Nevada State Financial Literacy Advisory Council are pleased to announce the lineup of events for Financial Literacy Month in April.

The celebration will include a PK-12 advertising contest with the theme "Smart Choices, Strong Future.” Additionally, a parent event will feature a student and expert panel discussion on raising money-smart children.

“Financial literacy is essential for preparing students to make informed financial decisions, develop smart money habits, and plan for their future,” said Jhone Ebert, Superintendent of Public Instruction. “This initiative encourages financial education through creativity, engagement, and real-world application.”

This initiative aligns with NRS 389.074, which mandates financial literacy instruction in Nevada schools to ensure students develop essential money management skills, including budgeting, saving, investing, and responsible credit use.

Here are the events planned for Financial Literacy Month:

Advertising Contest

Pre-kindergarten through 12th grade students are invited to participate in an advertisement contest, with a chance to win up to $200.

The submission deadline is April 21. Winners will be announced on May 1.

Students may submit advertisements based on the theme "Smart Choices, Strong Future." A 30-second commercial (video or audio format) or a flyer/poster (digital or physical format) will be accepted.

Questions to consider while creating the advertisement are: “Why is it important for kids to learn about money at a young age? How can making smart financial choices now impact your future?”

Winners will be selected in each category: grades K-2, 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12.

The prizes are $200 for first place, $150 for second place, and $100 for third place.

Contest entries will be showcased in schools, community spaces, and online.
