Private elementary and secondary schools play an important role in Nevada’s educational landscape, serving students and families across the state. There are approximately 128 private schools in Nevada, with the majority located in Southern Nevada.

Under Nevada law, private schools are governed by the Private Elementary and Secondary Education Authorization Act (NRS 394.201–394.351). With limited exceptions, it is unlawful to operate a private school without a license issued by the Nevada Department of Education (NDE). Schools affiliated with religious organizations, governmental entities, or fraternal or benevolent organizations may qualify for an exemption; however, such schools must file for and maintain their exemption status with the Nevada State Board of Education.

All private schools whether licensed or exempt must meet foundational educational requirements established in Nevada law. These include providing instruction in core academic subjects comparable to those required in public schools, maintaining a minimum of 180 days of instruction per school year, and ensuring appropriate instructional time. Private schools are also required to maintain student records, comply with applicable health and safety regulations, and submit required reports to the Superintendent of Public Instruction.

Licensing standards established by the Nevada State Board of Education ensure that private schools demonstrate educational quality, qualified staff, adequate facilities, sound financial practices, and transparent operational policies. While accreditation is optional in Nevada, some schools choose to pursue accreditation through recognized accrediting organizations as an additional measure of quality.

Private schools in Nevada operate independently of public school funding. However, families may have access to financial assistance through programs such as the Nevada Educational Choice Scholarship Program, which provides scholarships to eligible students attending participating private schools. Additionally, individual schools may offer institutional tuition assistance.

Parents and guardians who choose private education enter into a private agreement with the school and are responsible for tuition and any associated fees. In doing so, they acknowledge the distinct governance, policies, and educational models that may differ from those of public schools.

The Nevada Department of Education maintains a directory of authorized private schools, oversees licensure and exemption processes, and investigates complaints to ensure compliance with applicable statutes and regulations.
