Overview
In 2015, Assembly Bill 234 established the K-12 Academic Content
Standards, which required that educators complete a multicultural education
course prior to their initial licensing. Nevada Revised Statute (NRS) 389.520
further requires that the standards for social studies include multicultural
education, including information related to the contributions made by men and
women from various racial and ethnic backgrounds.
The mission of the Multicultural Education Task Force is to
ensure that students receive educational equity by promoting the development of
inclusive and responsive instructional practices while respecting and
appreciating the cultural diversity throughout Nevada.
Goals
- Examine current
culturally inclusive teaching practices in Nevada
- Build educator
capacity to increase culturally inclusive and multicultural education
principles into curriculum and classroom environments
- Provide professional
learning resources on cross curricular culturally inclusiveness and
multicultural education principles within the statewide learning management
system (LMS)
- Develop a rubric to
review resources to ensure alignment to the Nevada Academic Content Standards
and support implementation of the multicultural standards in social studies and
cross curricular
- Curate resources and
instructional materials for recommend use in all K-12 classrooms
