December 10, 2021
Carson City,
NV – The Governor’s Office
of Science, Innovation and Technology
(OSIT) and the Nevada Department of Education (NDE) today announced the number of
students in the 2021 graduating class to earn the State STEM and STEAM Seals on
their high school diplomas.
The agencies
celebrate the 1,004 students who earned the Nevada State STEM Seal and
the 1,488 students who earned the Nevada State STEAM Seal in the graduating
class of 2021. This announcement comes during Computer Science Education Week, December 6-10, 2021 as proclaimed by Governor Sisolak.
The Nevada
State Seal of STEM
recognizes students who attain a high level of proficiency in science,
technology, engineering, and mathematics. The Nevada State Seal of STEAM
recognizes students who attain a high level of proficiency in science,
technology, engineering, art, and mathematics. The Nevada Class of 2021
was the first graduating class to receive these seals.
“Congratulations
to the first cohort of Nevada graduates who have received State STEM and STEAM
Diploma Seals,” said Jhone Ebert, State Superintendent of Public Instruction.
“It brings us joy to see our students find their passions within STEM and
STEAM, and by dedicating themselves to building competencies in science,
technology, engineering, art, and mathematics, they are setting themselves up for
long-term success.”
“We are so
proud to see Nevada’s high school seniors earn the STEM and STEAM Seals through
their hard work and dedication,” said Tracey Howard, STEM Program Director
at OSIT. “These students will find success in Nevada’s growing STEM
workforce and we wish them the best.”
School
districts participating in the Nevada State Seal of STEM or STEAM Programs must
“identify the pupils who have met the requirements to be awarded the State Seal
of STEM (or STEAM) and affix the State Seal of STEM (or STEAM) to the diploma
and note the receipt of the State Seal of STEM (or STEAM) on the transcript of
each pupil who meets the requirements.” The STEM and STEAM Seals help Nevada’s high
school graduates to communicate their credentials to postsecondary education
programs.
The artwork for
the Nevada State Seals of STEM and STEAM was created by students through an art contest in spring 2021 with winners announced
on May 12. The STEM Seal artwork was designed by Chanel Koh of West Career and
Technical Academy, and the STEAM Seal artwork was designed by Korin Sjostrom
Las Vegas Academy of the Arts Performing Center.
