    U.S. Department of Education Loan Forgiveness and Loan Cancellation

    Teacher Loan Forgiveness

    • intended to encourage individuals to enter and continue in the teaching profession
    • teach full-time for five complete and consecutive academic years in certain elementary and secondary schools and educational service agencies that serve low-income families
    • meet other qualifications
    • may be eligible for forgiveness of up to a combined total of $17,500 
    • Direct Subsidized and Unsubsidized Loans 
    • Subsidized and Unsubsidized Federal Stafford Loans
    • PLUS loans only, you are not eligible for this type of forgiveness.

    Teacher Loan Cancellation

    • Federal Perkins Loan Program
    • full-time teaching at a low-income school or for teaching in certain subject areas
    • special education teacher
    • teacher in the fields of mathematics, science, foreign languages, or bilingual education, or in any other field of expertise determined by the Nevada Department of Education to have a shortage of qualified teachers in Nevada
    • may qualify for deferment for these qualifying teaching services
     

    Teacher Cancellation Low Income Directory

    The Teacher Cancellation Low Income Directory identifies public and private nonprofit elementary and secondary schools designated by the U.S. Department of Education as having a high concentration of students from low-income families.

    Does the Nevada Department of Education offer loans or grants?

    The Nevada Department of Education does not offer loans or grants. The United States Department of Education provides a "Free Application for Federal Student Aid" (FAFSA). There may be other funding for higher education available by researching the internet or by consulting with a school counselor.
