Nevada Department of Education Announces Release of AI Ethics Document

April 21, 2025

CARSON CITY, Nev. – The Nevada Department of Education is proud to announce the release of its artificial intelligence (AI) guidance document.

The document – "Nevada’s STELLAR Pathway to AI Teaching and Learning: Ethics, Principles, and Guidance" – was released on Monday on the Nevada Department of Education’s website: Nevada Digital Learning.

The Nevada AI Alliance, developed in partnership with the Nevada Community Foundation, represents a significant step toward responsibly integrating artificial intelligence into preschool through 12th grade classrooms across the state.

“With the Nevada AI Alliance, we are creating ethical guidelines and resources to ensure AI enhances education while maintaining equity, privacy, and the central role of educators,” said Dr. Steve Canavero, Interim Superintendent of Public Instruction. “The ultimate goal is to empower every Nevada student to succeed in a future shaped by technology.”

The initiative builds on months of collaborative discussions with educators, parents, students, and community stakeholders.

Through statewide town hall meetings with the Nevada AI Alliance, the Nevada Department of Education has prioritized addressing concerns elevated by the field related to equity in technology access, data privacy, and bias while emphasizing the essential role of teachers in using AI.

The guidance document provides actionable strategies for local education agencies to integrate AI responsibly.

These strategies focus on the ethical use of AI addressing:

  • Security

  • Transparency

  • Empowerment

  • Learning

  • Leadership

  • Achievement

  • Responsible use

Additionally, the initiative aligns with the Nevada Department of Education’s ongoing efforts to bridge the digital divide, protect student data, and prepare Nevada’s learners for the evolving demands of the 21st Century workforce.

The Nevada Department of Education invites educators, families, and community members to engage with the Nevada AI Alliance and explore the resources available to support this innovative initiative.
