Nevada Department of Education Announces SB460 Commission on Recruitment and Retention

September 25, 2025

CARSON CITY, Nev. – The Nevada Department of Education announced on Thursday the formation of the Commission on Recruitment and Retention.

Established by the Nevada Legislature under Senate Bill 460 (2025), the Commission will bring together a diverse group of stakeholders to examine and recommend solutions to Nevada’s educator workforce challenges.

“We are at a pivotal moment for public education in Nevada,” said Dr. Steve Canavero, Interim Superintendent of Public Instruction. “This commission offers a unique opportunity to unify our efforts and develop innovative, data-driven solutions to build and sustain a strong, professional workforce in our schools. I am confident that the collaboration among these diverse groups will lead to meaningful and lasting change.”

During the 2019 session, the Nevada State Teacher Recruitment and Retention Advisory Task Force was created. It was expanded in the 2023 session to include education support professionals.

With the creation of the Commission on Recruitment and Retention under Senate Bill 460, the Nevada State Teacher Recruitment and Retention Advisory Task Force was dissolved.

The new commission will include 17 voting members and five non-voting, ex officio members. The members will represent a wide range of expertise, including public education, higher education, human resources, and the private sector.

Members will also include parents, teachers, administrators, other licensed education personnel, and education support professionals.

The creation of the commission is a critical step in addressing the long-standing challenges of teacher and support staff shortages, which have a direct impact on student achievement and well-being.

The commission will gather input from all stakeholders, including the public, to ensure its recommendations are representative of the community’s needs.

Each of the appointing agencies is soliciting interest from its members or the targeted community to ensure a fair and transparent selection process.

Appointment letters are due to the Nevada Department of Education on or before Nov. 3. The first meeting of the Commission on Recruitment and Retention will be held in December.
