At what age can my child attend kindergarten?

Effective July 1st 2023, children will be required to turn 5 on or before August 1st to enter kindergarten.

The following flow charts were designed by the Nevada Department of Education to help families and schools understand enrollment in kindergarten and first grade for the 2024-2025 school year.

Where can I find out what school my child is zoned for and how to enroll? When does enrollment open for kindergarten?

The answers to these questions are specific to your physical address and county's school district. Please contact your county's school district office for this information, or you may contact your child's zoned school if you know it.

What documents are needed to enroll my child in kindergarten in Nevada?

Registration requirements are specific to each school district. Common requirements include proof of immunizations, original birth certificate, and address verification documents. Please contact your child's school for their specific enrollment requirements.

What is the Kindergarten Entry Assessment (KEA)?

The Kindergarten Entry Assessment (KEA) is required by Nevada law. All schools are required to assess children upon entry to Kindergarten. This assessment happens between 15 days before school starts to 45 days after school starts. The assessment is NOT used to admit or deny entry into Kindergarten. The assessment is used to inform instruction and also serve as a snapshot of statewide data. Nevada is in the process of adopting a new KEA.

Assembly Bill 65 (2023) was signed into legislation on 6/3/23 by Governor Lombardo. Effective July 1, 2024 the required school age for students in Nevada begins at age 6. Additionally, students will need to attend kindergarten before attending first grade.

Developmentally appropriate practice (DAP) refers to when classroom instruction, interaction, and the environment align with what we know is best for children based on child development research. DAP promotes each child’s optimal development and learning through a strengths-based, play-based approach to joyful, engaged learning.
