The Light Award is presented to a member who has been influential in shaping not only NASLEE, but also the field of early childhood. 

Anna has been a long-time NASLEE member and served in several leadership capacities for NASLEE in her 16 years in state government with the Nevada Department of Education. And the way in which Anna keeps leadership, learning and relationships core to her work is directly in line with NALSEE’s mission and values!Amelia Hernandez is an inspiring young leader who actively participated in the Nevada Department of Education’s Native Youth Community Project (NYCP), a grant focused on college and career readiness. While attending Yerington High School, she played a crucial role in developing outreach programs for her peers and establishing a vision centered on service, knowledge sharing, and stewardship. Through her strong ethics, Amelia helped create a sense of community by forming her community’s United National Indian Tribal Youth (UNITY) council. 

Amelia has guided her peers through two years of youth leadership conferences, connecting with hundreds of Native youth from across the nation. As a delegate for her Tribal Nation, she provided valuable insights on issues in education, health, and other policies impacting Native youth. Now, as an undergraduate student at the University of Nevada, Reno, she is actively involved in various campus activities and continues to drive positive change within her networks.
