September 24, 2024

CARSON CITY, Nev. – The U.S. Department of Education on Monday named Roger D. Gehring Academy of Science and Technology as a 2024 National Blue Ribbon School.

The Nevada Department of Education’s Office of Student and School Supports nominated Gehring Academy – a Clark County School District magnet school in Las Vegas - for the recognition.

“The Roger D. Gehring Academy of Science and Technology has set a remarkable standard for academic excellence in Nevada,” said Governor Joe Lombardo. “I am proud of the dedication and commitment from both students and educators which led to this prestigious award.”

Gehring Academy is among 356 schools nationwide that are receiving this year’s award.

“Congratulations to the educators, staff, students, and families at Roger D. Gehring Academy of Science and Technology on receiving the National Blue Ribbon School award,” said Jhone Ebert, Superintendent of Public Instruction. “This award is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the school community, and the school serves as a shining example nationwide.”

“We are so extremely proud of the students and educators at Roger D. Gehring Academy for their hard work and dedication to earn the National Blue Ribbon Award,” CCSD Interim Superintendent Dr. Brenda Larsen-Mitchell said. “Gehring Academy has fully embraced Project-Based Learning and STEM education, providing an avenue for students to engage in real-world, problem solving. Congratulations to our educators for setting high standards for students and working to close achievement gaps.”

The award showcases the outstanding dedication, hard work, and excellence of Gehring Academy’s students, teachers, staff, and school community, Principal Sarah Robinson said.

“Our educators have cultivated a dynamic learning environment that encourages curiosity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills, preparing our students to be future leaders,” Robinson said. “Our emphasis on embedding STEM education across all subjects has empowered our students to excel in these critical fields.”

Gehring Academy was nominated in two categories: exemplary high performing schools and exemplary achievement gap-closing schools.

Nationwide, approximately 9,700 schools have received the prestigious National Blue Ribbon School award since the program’s inception more than 40 years ago.

Each year, up to 420 schools from across the country are nominated. Gehring Academy was nominated to represent Nevada this year.

Fewer than 1 percent of public schools nationwide receive the award each year.
