CARSON CITY, Nev. – The Nevada Department of Education is pleased to announce the appointment of Tom Greene as Chief Strategy Officer, effective Sept. 1.

The Chief Strategy Officer works closely with the State Superintendent to advance the Department's strategic priorities, align efforts across the agency, and support measurable outcomes for students, educators, and communities throughout Nevada.

“Tom joins our team at an important moment as we drive forward our vision and priorities for Nevada’s students,” said Dr. Victor Wakefield, Superintendent of Public Instruction. “He brings the strategic thinking, collaborative leadership, and ability to build the systems needed to translate those priorities into action and measurable progress.”

Greene brings more than 20 years of experience in K-12 education, the technology sector, and organizational leadership to his new role.

“The Nevada Department of Education is doing incredible work on behalf of students, educators, and communities across the state, and I'm honored to join that effort,” Greene said. “I look forward to supporting Superintendent Wakefield and the NDE team as we advance Nevada’s shared commitment to educational excellence.”

Throughout his career, Greene has worked alongside state leaders nationwide to advance K-12 policies and solutions that strengthen state education systems. In Nevada, that has included a decade-plus partnership on initiatives to improve student outcomes, including the state’s Read by Grade 3 law in 2015.

Greene served as Entrepreneur-in-Residence with Opportunity 180 in Las Vegas in 2019, leading a feasibility study on launching a new education advocacy nonprofit backed by Nevada's business community.

Greene held technology leadership roles at both SAS Institute and Lenovo, bringing together expertise in education policy, data analytics, and technology innovation.

At SAS, he served as Senior Education Policy Advisor, partnering with state education agencies and school districts to enhance decision-making and improve student academic growth through data and analytics. At Lenovo, he led government relations across multiple states, supporting K-12 education and public sector technology modernization.

Before entering the education technology sector, Greene served as Vice President of Advocacy at the Foundation for Excellence in Education (ExcelinEd), where he led a national team advancing student-centered education policies in state capitals.

He also served in leadership roles with several national education organizations as a legislative policy analyst, legislative director, and executive.

Greene began his career as a public high school teacher through the North Carolina Teaching Fellows Program. He earned a Bachelor of Science in History, Secondary Education from Appalachian State University and a Master of Public Administration from the University of Southern California.

Tom has presented on education trends and public policy solutions at national conferences and summits hosted by the Education Commission of the States and the National Conference of State Legislatures.

Throughout his career, Greene has remained committed to helping states build high-performing education systems that prepare every student for lifelong success.
