School Nurse
Overview
School nursing, a specialized practice of nursing, protects and promotes student health, facilitates optimal development, and advances academic success. School nurses, grounded in ethical and evidence-based practice, are the leaders who bridge health care and education, provide care coordination, advocate for quality student-centered care, and collaborate to design systems that allow individuals and communities to develop their full potential. (Adopted by the NASN Board of Directors February 2017).
Nevada State Immunization Program (NSIP)

- NRS 392.435, NRS 394.192, NRS 432A.230, and NRS 432A.235 require that before December 31 of each year, each school and childcare facility shall report the exact number of pupils who have completed the immunizations required for enrollment.

Licensing for School RN’s
- Licensing- To work as a school nurse in Nevada you must have your Nevada State Board of Nursing license and your School Nurse Endorsement through the Nevada Department of Education.
- To apply for the School Nurse Endorsement, you must register for an account- Online Portal for Applications and Licensure (OPAL). Complete the application and submit the required documents; all in the OPAL portal.

- Two classes are required to complete the endorsement requirements:

- Three (3) semester credits in a course on Parent Involvement and Family Engagement that has been approved by the Department and is consistent with NRS 392.457.
- Must complete three (3) semester hours of credit in a course on multicultural education pursuant to NRS 391.0347.

- Some districts partner with different institutions and offer decreased rates, speak with your district prior to registering for a class.
- Once all the licensing requirements have been met, you will be issued a School Nurse Endorsement by the Nevada Department of Education
