Nevada Department of Education Announces Student Advisory Group

August 6, 2024

CARSON CITY, Nev. – The Nevada Department of Education is proud to announce the Superintendent’s Student Advisory Group for Education (NV SAGE), and an application is now available for those interested in serving.

The initiative is designed to empower students across Nevada to actively participate in shaping state education policy.

The advisory group was requested by Nevada State Board of Education student member Michael Keyes, a senior at Pahrump Valley High School.

“I am grateful for State Board member Michael Keyes and his leadership in ensuring that student voices are heard,” said Jhone Ebert, Superintendent of Public Instruction. “I look forward to discussing their educational priorities.”

The application deadline is Sept. 30. An application form is available on the Nevada Department of Education’s website.

Students who are interested in joining NV SAGE should apply through their school guidance counselor. District superintendents will review applications and nominate candidates for consideration.

NV Sage will include two students from each school district and two representing the State Public Charter School Authority.

The advisory group will include youth in eighth through 11th grades from school districts and public charter schools. Members will serve a two-year term.

The advisory group will meet monthly using a virtual platform.

Student advisory members will:

  • Advocate for positive changes in the state’s public schools.
  • Act as liaisons between their schools, districts, and the state.
  • Amplify student voices by sharing concerns and feedback on educational priorities.
  • Encourage greater student involvement in statewide programs.
