Chronic Absenteeism Prevention
Overview
The Office for a Safe and Respectful Learning Environment is leading NDE efforts to reduce chronic absenteeism statewide through a data-driven multi-tiered systems approach to support schools in creating learning environments where students, staff, and families feel safe, connected, and engaged.
Chronic absenteeism is when a student misses 10% or more of their enrolled school days per year for any reason, excused or unexcused (e.g., short-term illness, suspension, the need to care for a family member, etc.) *students with certain documented health conditions that impact attendance may not be considered chronically absent per NRS 392.050
The NDE is committed to ensuring every student has the opportunity to learn in a safe and supportive school environment. Addressing chronic absenteeism is a key component of this commitment. Chronic absenteeism can significantly impact student learning, wellbeing, and long-term success.
Students who are chronically absent in early grades are four times more likely to fall behind academically and seven times more likely to drop out of high school. To reverse these trends, Nevada schools are implementing a collaborative, multi-tiered approach that addresses the root causes of absenteeism and ensures that students are supported both in and outside the classroom.
Core Strategies for Prevention
Nevada schools are advancing chronic absenteeism prevention through the following evidence-based strategies that promote engagement and belonging:
-
Positive School Climate & Relationships – Fostering comprehensive, welcoming environments where students feel seen, safe, and supported.
-
Early Identification & Intervention – Using data to identify at-risk students early and implement supports before absenteeism becomes chronic.
-
Family Partnership – Engaging families as partners to help understand and remove attendance barriers.
-
Health and Mental Health Supports – Integrating school-based health services and connecting students to community providers as needed.
-
Restorative Practices & Trauma-Informed Care – Addressing the underlying causes of disengagement and building trust and accountability.
