Overview

What is the Nevada Department of Education’s (NDE) role in Pupil Transportation?

The Department of Education provides statewide leadership, standards, and oversight for pupil transportation; ensuring that transportation programs across Nevada meet state and federal safety, training, and compliance requirements. NRS 385.075 requires the State Board establish policies to govern the administration of all functions of the State relating to supervision, management, and control of public schools not conferred by law or some other agency.

Statewide Standards and Guidance

NDE establishes and maintains standards for pupil transportation programs throughout Nevada. This includes guidance on:

  • School bus specifications and safety requirements
  • Driver qualifications and certification standards
  • Inspection procedures and operational expectations
  • Required reporting and documentation

Who is responsible for establishing school bus routes/stops in Nevada?
Under NRS 386.790, the Board of Trustees is authorized to establish school bus routes, schedules, and designated stops. These operational decisions are developed and finalized by local district transportation departments, not by the Department of Education.

If you have any questions or need assistance pertaining to bus routes/stops please reach out to your district's transportation team. These contacts can be found in the Transportation Directory.
