CARSON CITY, Nev. – The Nevada Department of
Education (NDE or Department) has announced that five schools in Nevada have
received the Nevada Purple Star School Award. Schools receiving this award have committed to supporting the
unique educational and social-emotional needs of military-connected children.
The
five schools are:
- Coral Academy of Science Las Vegas, State Public Charter School
Authority
- Coronado High School, Clark County School District
- Mountain View Lutheran School, Las Vegas
- Vincent L. Triggs Elementary School, Clark County School District
- Fredric W. Watson Elementary School, Clark County School District
“Our
military-connected students experience unique challenges and play important
roles in our school communities,” said Jhone Ebert, State Superintendent of
Public Instruction. “I commend Nevada’s five new Purple Star Schools for fostering
environments where children from military-connected families are able to
thrive, and encourage all schools in our State to work to attain this
designation.”
NDE
announced the designations during November, which is National Veterans and
Military Families Month. The Department honored the schools with celebrations the
week of November 15. Each school was presented with a certificate and banner
signaling that the school supports the social and emotional wellbeing of
military students in adjusting to a new school and the absence of a parent during
deployment.
The
five recognized schools join two other Nevada schools which were named as the first-ever Purple Star
School Awards in the State in April 2021. Those two schools are Robert O.
Gibson Leadership Academy and Ernest A. Becker, Sr. Middle School in Clark
County School District.
“Achieving
a Purple Star School designation lets our military families know they will
receive much-needed assistance as they transition to a new home and school
district,” said Major General Ondra L. Berry, Nevada Adjutant General.
“Schools that take this step toward a Purple Star designation show they care
for our military members and their families, and I'm excited that seven schools
in Nevada have now taken this step."
The
Purple Star School Award Program is facilitated by NDE in partnership with the
Nevada Military Interstate Compact Commission Council.
