National Expert on Educational Equity and Supporting Marginalized Students Highlights Family Engagement Summit
CARSON CITY, Nev. – Dr. Victor Rios, Professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of California, Santa Barbara, who has been featured in TED Talks, the Oprah Winfrey Network, and National Public Radio, will highlight the 2018 Nevada Family Engagement Summit.
This year’s statewide Summit, titled “Connections, Relationships, Partnerships,” will take place Saturday, September 22 at Truckee Meadows Community College in Reno. The Summit is a one day event dedicated to family engagement capacity building and best practices. Parents, families, educators, community members, and district leaders will come together to learn how to create and strengthen family-school partnerships. Over 30 years of research confirms the positive impact family engagement has on student achievement.
“Day-to-day effective family engagement practices and strategies in a child’s education that support learning at home, at school, and after school are instrumental in improving student outcomes and achieving our goal of becoming the fastest improving state in the nation,” said Steve Canavero, Ph.D., Superintendent of Public Instruction.
Summit attendees will have 30 workshops to choose from; the workshops will be facilitated by local and national family engagement practitioners and experts.
