CARSON CITY, Nev. – The Nevada State Board of Education today welcomed Jhone Ebert, who was appointed by Gov. Steve Sisolak as the Superintendent of Public Instruction.

“On behalf of the board, I’d like to be the first to welcome Jhone Ebert and state that we are all looking forward to working with her,” said Elaine Wynn, President of the Nevada State Board of Education. “Knowing that our goal was to expedite the selection process as much as possible, I was delighted by the quality and depth of the candidates we received. We applaud the Governor for appointing Jhone, who has the right experience at the local, state, and national level to help close the achievement gaps that currently challenge Nevada’s education system.”

Former Superintendent Steve Canavero announced his resignation on January 25. Jonathan Moore has been the acting Superintendent since February 7. A search committee made up of State Board members immediately began the search process that attracted 33 candidates. The Board recommended Brett Barley, Jhone Ebert, and Seng-Dao Yang Keo to the Governor for consideration on March 12.

“I believe we have begun to make progress in student achievement over the past few years, and our board feels it’s important that our new Superintendent gets up to speed quickly and continues our quest to become the fastest improving state in the nation,” Wynn said. “I am confident that the new Superintendent will work well with both the Governor and the State Board.”

Ebert is a life-long educator with executive-level expertise in state and district education administration and decades of experience working with diverse students, geographies, and educational delivery models. Since 2015, she has served as the senior deputy commissioner for P-20 education policy at the New York State Education Department. In this role, Ebert is the senior education policy advisor to the state commissioner and Board of Regents, leading policymaking and programs affecting teaching and learning from early childhood through postsecondary education, or P-20. During her tenure, graduation rates in New York have increased and achievement gaps have narrowed. Previously, Ebert served in the Clark County School District (CCSD) for 25 years, most recently as chief innovation and productivity officer and chief technology officer. Ebert has served in a variety of leadership roles within CCSD and began her education career as a mathematics teacher in Las Vegas.

Ebert is the recipient of numerous professional honors and awards, including the National School Boards Association’s Technology Leadership Network 20 to Watch, CCSD Excellence in Education Hall of Fame Award, Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics Teaching, and the Fulbright-Hayes Program scholarship. Ebert received her Master of Education in instructional and curricular studies from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and her Bachelor of Arts in mathematics from California State University Fresno.
